Dangerous Romance

There have been a lot of dangerous relationships in the history of the world, but I think that I’ve portrayed one of the most toxic.

This was a part of a derby at Shirt.Woot.com, the theme was cleaning, and I decided to take a different approach to it than all of the soapy designs people made. I thought that a mesh of Romeo and Juliet and Bleach and Ammonia would be an interesting juxtaposition.

The sketch for this design came together really fast after looking at what bottles I wanted to use. I thought the thinner bottle being Juliet was fitting. I also have always imagined bleach as male. Kind of weird now that I think about it.
This is the sketch after taking it into Adobe Photoshop and outlining it. As you can see, the heart turned into a fun emoji of the chemicals’ love for each other. I liked it because I didn’t really want to have text in this design because I default to text to carry the design a lot, and I wanted to go without this time.
Here it is fully colored without shading. It still felt like something made in Microsoft Paint and didn’t have any depth. I knew I needed to add shadows to give it more depth and feeling.

This is the final image. I used halftones to make the shadows for the first time, and I really liked it. The shading added a lot of meaning into the art, and I’m proud of how it turned out.
